STEM engagement opportunity: Snap the Gap

Guest post | Research shows that individuals with mentors have improved academic, social and economic prospects. For women in the STEM fields, this becomes increasingly important as young women look to role models to help them gain their confidence and increase opportunities in STEM fields.  It is even more important when we see that the gender gap in STEM emerges as early as elementary school! UC Davis is strongly committed to changing this.

Earlier this year, we received a grant to help us to create and launch a program we call Snap The Gap.

UC Davis, CA Million Women Mentors and littleBits are partnering to deliver an exceptional STEM based experience to 15,000 10- to 12-year-old girls in California that will enhance the development of a strong STEM identity, leading to increased persistence and retention in STEM.

Snap the Gap is rooted in three activities – hands on experiential learning, mentorship, and expanded learning opportunities.

This no-cost program provides each participant a mentor, a littleBits STEM Inventor kit, and a one-year subscription to DIY.org, an online learning platform that provides hundreds of activities the participants can tackle after the formal program is complete. We work with schools and other sites to adapt the program to meet your timeline.

We are working with host sites through schools, after-school programs, Girl Scouts, 4H,  and other girl-serving organizations.  We assist with mentor recruitment for each site, so girls will benefit from the guidance of a STEM mentor to assist them in STEM career exploration and achieving the highest and best use of the STEM kits and the accompanying online learning platform.

We are currently recruiting sites and mentors for our 2019 pilot program in California.
